How to Make a Ferrari 288 GTO hit 275 mph

News

288 GTO powered by a 8.7 liter big block Chevy engine becomes the fastest Ferrari ever.

A few years back, I remember reading in Evo magazine about a Ferrari 288 GTO powered by a Ford 427 spotted at the Bonneville Salt Flats. I had to learn more, but a Google keyword search yielded nothing. Now I'm happy to say that this Italian-American Frankenstein has finally surfaced again. In the never ending search for more outright speed, the Ford mill has been ditched in favor of a 530 ci Chevy big block (for the record that's 8.7 liters) with two gigantic Borg Warner turbos breathing 17 pounds of boost on to it. Owner and driver Steve Trafton says the car produces somewhere between 2,000 and 2,500 hp.

It recently achieved an average top speed of 275.4 miles per hour during two runs at the Bonneville Salt Flats. As a result the company that built it, P4 by Norwood, is claiming it's the fastest Ferrari ever. Is a Ferrari without a Ferrari engine still a Ferrari? That's for you to decide. Some may view this car as an abomination, but you've got to admire harebrained thinking like this.
