Spotted in the Wild: Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

Modified Karmann Ghia braving the winter

A modified classic Volkswagen spotted braving the salted roads

The weather may have slightly improved here in South East England but the roads are still not exactly suitable for classic cars, especially with all the salt that has been put down. Most of the roads here are doing passable impressions of the Bonneville Salt Flats!

With all this in mind, It was somewhat of a surprise to see a mildly customised Volkswagen Karmann Ghia parked outside Starbucks at the London-bound services near Ripley in Surrey.

Mostly de-chromed, sporting matt black paintwork and with a very large exhaust silencer protruding from the rear, this V-Dub looked a lot more purposeful than standard. The interior was rather plain but did include some bucket seats which may have been donated from an old Porsche 911.

Also donated from an older Porsche were the alloy wheels. Rather the the usual Fuchs alloys upgrade, this example sported a set of Design 90 alloys from an early nineties Porsche (still with the Porsche Centre caps). The original Porsche home for these I would assume now sports a set of Cups.

While I'm not sure I would want to risk a classic car with the salt and resulting corrosion issues, it was was nice to see an interesting car out on Boxing Day.
