Geneva 2011: Morgan Threewheeler

News

Morgan introduces three wheeled bliss upon Geneva.

Morgan unveiled what may have been the coolest car at the Geneva Motor Show. While it may not have the most creative name in world, the Morgan Threewheeler is a throwback to the one liter, three wheeled cars Morgan built in the 1930s. Recent years have not been kind to three wheeled cars. Grinnal gave up on the idea by giving their Scorpion a fourth wheel and the gimmicky T-Rex has always been pretty awful. This recent history makes the Threewheeler a very welcome addition to the small world (one which you probably need a large beard to inhabit) of three wheeled motoring.

But make no mistake, this thing does not hang about. It's powered by a 115 hp V twin, which hopefully means it sounds like a Harley. The engine is mounted proudly on the exterior of the car in front of the radiator. Putting power through a Mazda five speed transmission, this motor is able to propel the Threewheeler to 60 in an impressive 4.5 seconds.

Morgan is keen to make this car fun and accessible and with a price of £25,000 / $40,000 it seems to have largely succeeded. It's available in an assortment of colors, but the WWii fighter plane inspired graphics on the one pictured seem to some how work. Big props to Morgan for having the courage to build something that's fast, cheap and has gobs of personality. Other car companies take note.
