Unearthing film of a Ferrari Daytona road test from when it was new
I'm a big fan of period footage of the cars that are today considered as classics, so I was rather excited when I stumbled across this film of a review of the Ferrari 365GTB4 Daytona, shot in Quebec in 1972 on the French Daily Motion video site.
The car being reviewed is a European specification car as shown by the plexiglass nose section and also fairly early production example judging by the lack of head rests on the seats. It has had some modifications on it's journey to North America though as the knock on wheel nuts have been replaced by the US specification octagonal items.
The commentary is in French which, unless you speak the language, is unlikely to impart any new knowledge on the Daytona (you can always visit the Drive Cult Garage if you want to learn more). You may also find the soundtrack, which sounds suspiciously like an instrumental version of Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline, possibly not in keeping with car.
All is forgiven though when you get to around 7:00 minutes into the film when the French Canadian early seventies equivalent of Chris Harris puts the car though it's paces on the track. The driver, wearing a suitable seventies driving outfit complete with leather driving gloves and open face helmet, doesn't hold back in pushing what was then one of the most expensive cars you could buy around Mont Treblant circuit . Also note the circuit's lack of run off areas. The V12 sounds gorgous as it is being wrung out.
Car review videos have come a long way since but considering the youngest Daytona's are nearly forty years old I doubt any current journalist would get to push a street Daytona quite as hard as this.
