Porsche Announces Sub Seven Minute ‘Ring Time For the 918 Spyder

News

The fastest production car around the Nürburgring is a hybrid.

Remember when we told you yesterday about all the official facts and figures on the 918 Spyder that Porsche had just had just made public? Well, they saved one last piece of information for the official public debut today and it’s a stunner.

On September 4th, the 918 set a scarcely believable time around the Nürburgring of 6:57 at an average speed of 111 mph, making it not only the fastest car that can be sold anywhere in the world, but also the first to dip below seven minutes. A team of three drivers, including Walter Rörhl, Timo Kluck and Marc Lieb all participated, but it was Lieb that eventually set the best time.

There’s been plenty of doubt in the last few months surrounding the 918 and its ability to stand toe-to-toe with the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari, but this, combined with McLaren’s rumored failed attempt to achieve a sub seven minute lap, has to be putting smiles on the faces of several engineers at Porsche.
