RM to auction a rare alloy bodied Mercedes 300SL ‘Gullwing’ in London

Star lot at RM's annual London auction this year will be a rare alloy bodied 300sl Gullwing, one of only 29 with the lightweight bodywork.

Any gullwing is special but the Alloy bodied cars are the most special of all. With a full nut and bolt restoration by marque specialist Kienle and authenticated by Mercedes Benz Classic, RM have not released an estmate but based on previous sales of Alloy bodied Gullwings expect it to sell for in the region of $4,000,000.

Ferrari 250 ‘Tour de France’ to be auctioned by RM in Monterey

The annual classic car extravaganza that is Monterey week is almost upon us. As expected all the major auction houses have buldging catalogues offering some of the finest motoring metal ever made. One of the most desirable has to be the 1956 Ferrari 250GT chassis 0585GT offered by RM Auctions.  Predating the 250SWB and GTO the early 250GT's  with the longer 2.6m wheelbase are often known as Tour de France because of their success in the automobile version of the event. Of these 0585GT is one of the desirable so called  14 louvre cars on account of the louvres on the rear sail panels.

Ferrari 625TRC to be offered at RM Auction in Monaco

It probably won't have escaped your notice that Fifties Sports racing Ferraris are hot property in the high end classic car auction world at the moment, with an example of the seminal 250 Testa Rossa holding the world record for the most expensive car ever sold at auction.

In actual fact the 250 Testa Rossa is just one of a surprisingly large number of different types of Ferrari racers made during the period. Ferrari would often mix and match different chassis and engines to make suitable cars for specific races and to meet requirements from customers.

The 1957 Ferrari 625 TRC (chassis 0680MDTR) offered by RM Auctions in their May Monaco auction is one such variation. Two 625TRCs were both made at the request of Ferrari's US West Coast distributor John Von Neumann.  Using the chassis of the smaller 500 TRC both examples were powered by a Lampredi designed 2.5 litre twin cam four cylinder engine producing around 225bhp.

Von Neuman successfully raced the car in sports car events along the West Coast scoring a number of Victories and podium's in his on future F1 driver Richie Ginther's hands. By 1960 however Von Neumann was in financial difficulties as a result of a divorce and the 0680 was sold less engine. As was a common fate of Ferrari sportscars of the day the new owner re-engined the car with a Chevrolet V8 and raced the car throughout the sixties.

In 1981 the car came into possession of the current owner, who commissioned a restoration. and had a 250 Testa Rossa specification 3.0 V12 installed. While this particular chassis never raced with a V12 in period, it's sister 625TRC (0674MDTR) did have such an engine installed in 1959.

In its current configuration the car has been used extensively at events such as the Monterey Historic races and shown twice at the Pebble Beach Concours.

To add to the desirability of the car the original four cylinder engine is also being offered with the car at the sale. leaving the lucky new owner with something of a dilemma. The car is probably more desirable to collectors and historians with it's original engine in place, but with the powerful V12 engine installed it it to all intends and purposes a 250 Testa Rossa.

RM are yet to release an estimate for the car,  and while I doubt it will reach the levels of the Pontoon Fender 250 Testa Rossa's  this (arguably) more attractive looking car will easily bring home a seven figure sum.
