The Ferrari 400 Superamerica

RM are offering this 400 SA Cabriolet (one of only six in this body style) as one of the feature lots at their inaugural auction in Monaco.

In Ferrari terms many will associate the name Superamerica (SA) with the flip-top version of the Ferrari 575. For those with longer memories, back in the fifties and sixties there were a whole series of firstly America and later Superamerica models.

The last of the SAs, the 400 sported a 4.0 litre V12 quoted at 340bhp (remember the larger 4-cam six-carburettor Daytona engine is quoted at 352bhp). Hugely expensive when new, only a handful of these cars were sold to the super-rich, in a variety of body styles. The best known of these are the Coupe Aerodynamica versions which featured flowing coupe lines. All of the cars had detail differences and no two cars were exactly alike.

The styling is somewhat reminiscent of the similar period 250 Cabriolet and California Spyder cars, but the larger-engined 400SA is intended to be a touring car. This particular example also sports a rather attractive removable hardtop.

Perhaps not one of the more iconic classic Ferraris, this is much more the a connoisseur's choice and the perfect car for entry into the Pebble Beach or Villa D'este concours.
