Volkswagen announces radical Vision GTI Roadster for GT6

Vision GTI Roadster coming in June. New Ayrton Senna themed content drops tomorrow.

Updates to Gran Turismo 6 have been coming in rapid succession recently and it’s a trend that’s set to continue well into June. Today Volkswagen announced the Vision GTI Roadster, which will be coming in digital form to GT6 as part of the Vision Gran Turismo series of cars in mid-June.

The GTI Roadster is a radical open-top take on the traditional GTI formula, and was designed without the constraints that come with developing a production car. With its monocoque chassis, it’s closer in concept to, say, a KTM X-Bow rather than a road-going GTI.

Volkswagen Auto Group recently has been all about touting big power from its range of TSI engines in concept cars, and the GTI Roadster is no different. Its 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbocharged TSI produces a massive 503-hp and 413 lb-ft of torque between 4000 and 6000 rpm. Power is channeled to all four wheels through VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive and 7-speed DSG gearbox. Sixty comes in an estimated 3.5 seconds.

Ultimately, it’s all ones and zeros, but Volkswagen is showing a full-scale mockup at the annual GTI festival in Wöthersee, Austria.

In the more immediate future for GT6, a boatload of new Ayrton Senna themed content is expect tomorrow, and will include Senna’s DAP Racing Kart, Lotus 97T, and 1983 West Surrey Racing British F3 car. Also included will be recreations of Monza and Brands Hatch as they were in 1985, and new online events which will have players chasing down Senna’s pole-position lap times on both circuits. On top of all that, Gran Turismo has also released this brief Senna documentary, which you can enjoy below.
