Ferrari 458 Italia GT2 Caught Testing

News

Ferrari readies its 2011 GT2 class Le Mans contender at Fiorano.

In recent years, GT2 has been a fiercely competitive class in endurance racing series around the world, including the LMS and the ALMS, and it's showing no signs of letting up for 2011.

With that in mind, Ferrari has been hard at work prepping their all new 458 GT2, which will replace the hugely successful F430 GT2. So far, all we have is this picture, which comes courtesy of Axis of Oversteer, but we can make a few educated guesses as to what will be powering it. Since power is limited to around 500 hp in GT2, it's likely that the 458 GT2 will be powered by the same 4.0 liter V8 from the F430 GT2 rather than the 560 hp 4.5 liter V8 in the roadgoing 458. Either that, or that new 4.5 liter will be breathing through a straw to bring its horsepower in line with the rest of the class.

Risi Compitizione and AF Corse likely have first dibs on it in the US and Europe respectively. Look for its race debut in mid-March at the 12 Hours of Sebring with the Risi team. Also look for a counter in the form of a new 911 GT3 RSR from Porsche
