Mercedes-Benz Unveils S-Class Coupe Concept

News

With its whale fin inspired inspired dashboard, the S-Class Coupe just might be the most "sensual" car you could one day buy.

Standing front and center at the Mercedes-Benz  area at the Frankfurt motor show is the gorgeous S-Class Coupe Concept. The name itself is also noteworthy in that it likely signifies a move away from the CL moniker that adorned previous big Mercedes coupes.

Though it is officially a concept, this is likely a very close approximation of a road going S-Class Coupe. As with its CL forbearers, the S-Class coupe has a B-pillarless, continuously arching roofline that provides an airy interior feel unlike that of any other car. The face is similar to the one found on the new CLA hatch, but the rear evokes the SLS AMG. Though, perhaps the coolest feature here is in the single piece of curved glass that comprises both the windshield and the gigantic sunroof. Hopefully, the top is tintable so as to avoid solar roasted plutocrats.

The latest S-Class sedan is a fantastically appointed car and the coupe variant should be no different. Mercedes says that, “The white instrument panel exudes sensual clarity. Its curved shape is reminiscent of a whale's fins just before it re-enters the water.” They then go on to use the word “sensual” several more times, but there’s no doubt that the S-Class Coupe would be a very nice place to be. Especially given that, “the central command unit on the center console looks like a shiny jewel.”

Power comes from Mercedes’ 4.6 liter Biturbo V8 and produces 449 horsepower and 516 pound feet of torque. Expect other engine options in the form of a 6.0 liter V12 and a more raucous V8 when the lunatics from AMG get their hands on it.
