Restoring a screen icon back to its former glory...
Twenty-five years ago today, Doctor Emmett Brown launched a DeLorean through the fabric of time in the parking lot of the Lone Pine Mall. Following storage in an abandonded mine, the DeLorean was later fixed up in 1955 before an untimely demise at the hands of an Amtrax locomotive...
Of course, the veil of movie magic means that while one DeLorean bit the dust on those Californian railroad tracks, many others DeLoreans were built and used throughout filming, and now one has been restored to its former glory.
While the automotive stars of car-based movies may be idolised by fans, the cars are little more than props to the studios that create them. They are left neglected, toured to launch DVDs or theme park attractions, then salvaged for parts. We saw McLaren's storage shed, but the story of a screen-used DeLorean created for off-road running in Back to the Future 3 (the one with cowboys, and Buford 'Mad Dog' Tannen) which was neglected then restored over several years is quite something! There's also information about the modifications made to this particular car, the others that were used in filming, and the terrible alterations made to the car when it was used for publicity!
