Audi's new A6 for 2011 is bigger yet lighter than ever.
Audi seems hell bent on making their core model lineup look more similar than ever. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. It's a handsome car, but the 2011 A6 bears more that a passing resemblance to both the A6 and the A4. One feature that distinguishes the A6 from both it's larger and smaller siblings is the shape of the headlamps, which is inspired by the Quattro concept and other recent Audi concept cars. History suggests that this and other styling cues will eventually find their way to the entire Audi range.
Thanks to the extensive use of Aluminum in its construction, the new A6 weighs 3470 lb/1575 kg, which is extremely light for the segment. Five engines will be available at launch which include two and three liter diesels and for the first time, a hybrid. The sportiest of the engine range will be a slightly detuned version of the supercharged V6 from the S4. All engines will feature stop-start technology which contributes to a 19% improvement in fuel efficiency across the range.
The new A6 will face the usual stiff competition from Mercedes and BMW in the segment it occupies, but the reduction in weight should have nothing but positive effects on driving dynamics. Whatever the outcome, and despite the fact that it's indistinguishable from other Audis, it's brilliant to see car companies making concerted efforts at build lighter cars.
